SEAL Team Six

No fewer than two days after the assault on Osama Bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan, Disney bought the exclusive rights to the phrase “Seal Team 6″, (the special forces team that killed OBL, the worlds most wanted man) allowing them to slap the brand all over “clothing, footwear, headwear, toys, games and entertainment and education services”.

A report in the Orlando Sentinel suggests that:

this is not the first time a company has trademarked SEAL Team 6. Previous owner NovaLogic, Inc., abandoned two associated trademarks in 2006. Those trademarks focused on computer and video gaming.

To be clear this does not mean that Disney will produce a film based on the event – particularly as there is already a movie by Mark C. Andrews entitled ‘SEAL Team VI’ released in 2008 straight to DVD. Even though that flick was “inspired by real events”, I expect Andrews wishes he’d held out for this more public knowledge real event to make his film.
